The BAT Library - Our CRB checking service
The BAT Library
At our head office in Southlands Road, Bromley, we have a very comprehensive resource library which has information on all aspects of the autistic spectrum.
The library is continually updated with new publications, in addition to research articles, newspaper cuttings, directories, handbooks and DVDs.
There are many new books which have a wealth of information and suggestions based on people’s experiences of ASD.
The library is open on Thursdays and Fridays between 9am and 5pm. Families are welcome to come and browse through resources on site. BAT members can borrow resources and take them home for up to one month.
Our volunteer librarian is a highly knowledgeable parent who can help you to find exactly what you need from among our books, DVDs and other resources.
Our librarian has drawn up a list of recommended books and other resources.
For information on books about ASD, there are two catalogues which list available publications: the National Autistic Society catalogue and the Jessica Kingsley listing. We have copies of these in the library. They can also be obtained direct from NAS Publications (0845 458 9911 or through the NAS website www.autism.org.uk) and Jessica Kingsley (020 7833 2307 or online at www.jkp.com/catalogue/autism).
We would like to acknowledge The Harris Trust who provided us with the initial funding which enabled us to set up the library and resource centre.

Disclosure Applications
A Disclosure is a document containing information held by the police and government departments. Disclosures are provided by the Criminal Records Bureau an executive agency of the home office. More detailed CRB Disclosure information is available by visiting their website at www.crb.homeoffice.gov.uk
Levels of Disclosure
We offer two levels of Disclosure, Standard and Enhanced.
Standard Disclosures are primarily for posts that do not involve close contact with children or vulnerable adults. They contain details of all convictions held on the Police National Computer including current and ‘spent’ convictions as well as details of any cautions, reprimands or final warnings.
If a position involves contact with children, the Disclosure will indicate whether information is held on government department lists, held by the DfES and the DH, of those who are banned from working with children. The Disclosure also includes information held by the DH of those considered to be unsuitable to work with vulnerable adults.
Enhanced Disclosures are for posts involving a far greater degree of contact with children or vulnerable adults. In general the type of work will involve regularly caring for, supervising, training or being in sole charge of such people. Examples include, teachers, scout or guide leaders and day care staff. Enhanced Disclosures are also issued for certain statutory purposes such as gaming and lottery licences. In addition to the details contained in the standard Disclosure the enhanced Disclosure includes a check on local police records. Relevant additional information may be released and included in the Enhanced Disclosure, if such information is relevant, to the post an applicant is being considered for.
If you are unsure which disclosure is required for your role, please in the first instance contact CRB on
